Rang 7 went to Fota Wildlife Park recently. They all had great fun exploring the park.  A big thanks to Garda Liam for driving the Garda Bus for us. 

What a Marvelous Night!

The Carol Service on the 14th of December was a fabulous night. Many thanks to everyone who helped out – the staff of Scoil na mBuachaillí, Parent’s Association of SnB, Mike Dempsey, Eamon Finn, Rebecca and Rob from the Emmet Hotel, The Residents of Emmet Square, the Sound Crew led by Dylan Walsh, Liam McCarthy and Niall Harrington, Max Wade and Matthew O’Regan, Margaret Deegan, Ann McKiernan and Noreen Minihan.

Debating Team in Action

New Science Kits purchased

New Science Equipment
We decided to upgrade our science equipment and recently we bought The Primary Science Let’s Experiment With… Seriesof kits and books. Each kit consists of a box of materials (sufficient for a class of 30 pupils working in groups) plus a Teacher’s Notes Book and a Pupil’s Notes Book which can be photocopied for multiple uses. The individual kits can cater for all classes in the school.
The Kits we bought include a kit on

 Magnetism
 Light 
 Forces & Motion
 Sound
6 th class have been busy helping Ms. Fitzmaurice sort through each kit. We also ordered a trolley which will hold all the kits and allow classes to access the kits when they need them.
The Science Kits in total cost 1350 euros. We are very grateful to the Parents Association who paid for the kits. They used the money which they raised from the Christmas Cards to cover the cost of these kits. All the pupils are very excited about these kits and look forward
to using them in all classes throughout the school.

Chess in Senior Infants

A few 4th class boys came to Senior Infants to play chess. They had great fun!

Science Fair in Rang 4

The Science Fair by Wiktor Firek and Ben Eady both age 10

Fourth class hosted a Science Fair for Science Week. We invited Senior Infants to come and see our experiments. There were an exciting line up of experiments and it was enjoyed by all.

Séimí Forristal, Max O’Keefe and Darragh Clarke did an experiment where the drove wind up cars on different surfaces wood, sandpaper, cloth and bubble wrap the bubble wrap did pretty bad the wood did excellent the sandpaper did well and on the cloth it didn’t even move.

Harry Lyons, J.J O’Donell and Jack Rea did the colourful volcano experiment they put vinegar into a jar and washing up liquid and some food colouring, stir for 1 minute and then add baking soda and it gives you like a foam explosion.

Wiktor Firek, Seán Kennedy and Tomás Lowery did an experiment where they put vinegar in a bottle and baking soda into a balloon and put the balloon onto the bottle and it poured into the bottle and it blew up the balloon.

Ben Eady and D.J O Sullivan, Ben did will it pop it needed a balloon water and a pencil it did not pop it was very exciting then D.J did the balloon tube he used washing up liquid and a needle, he put the needle in the washing up liquid and put it through the balloon it did not pop it was very exciting.

Daniel Dempsey, Francesco Bakaj, Kieran Gannon, Rhys Finn and Ewan Brooks Griffin did the skittles experiment first they got a plate and then they put the skittles in a circle on the plate and then they got a spoon and a bowl and put water on the plate and they waited 30 seconds to a minute and then the colour came off the skittles and made a rainbow.

James McCarthy, Kevin O’Brien, Aaron Nash and Cillian O’Mahony did the lava lamp experiment first you need a bottle then put water to a quarter of the bottle the but red food colouring and then put sunflower oil in the bottle and put an everson tablet in and it will make a lava lamp.

Louis Kitaguwa, Logan Farell Kelleher and Pavlo Martovytski did an experiment where they drew something put it on a plate with water and after some time the drawing floated on to the water and it was very cool.

Dear Parents, please find the list of fees for the coming year. Music enrolment is only by the App again this year. Guitar Rental: we are changing the guitar rental scheme this year as new instruments will have to be purchased. The new fee is non refundable but is reduced to €25 instead of €50. Closing date for all fees please is Saturday 30th of September 2023 (except for Milk and Swimming which are due on their due dates). What’s going on? … in school and extra-curricular activities

Chess: is on Tuesday 3rd of October for Boys in Rang 4 only.
Rang 5 and Rang 6 are starting once Sciath na Scol is finished on Wednesdays after school.
Thanks to Ms. Niamh Mac Auley and Ms. Laura Connolly for their help with the players. Thanks to Ms. Gillian Galvin for her help with the Learners Chess Club.

Basketball 23/24: Basketball training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thanks to Ms. Carol Anne O’Donovan / Seán Daly / Paul Carmody / Ciarán Crowley for assisting again with Basketball this year. This year it have to be run as last year – Tuesday will be for Rang 5 / Thursday will be for Rang 6.

Quizzard ‘23/24: is on Fridays at lunchtime. Classes from Rang 3 – Rang 6 will be participating. This will start in early October.

Wardens – every year Rang 6 and some Rang 5 act as School Wardens. Thanks to our team of SET teachers who are looking after the wardens again this year. Thanks also to Chris Hinchy for his help again this year.

If you cannot find the PPS you can ring 023 – 8821900 and they will be able to locate the number and give it to you over the phone.  Noreen will be contacting parents who have not yet sent in their child’s PPS number later in September.

If you have moved, changed phone/mobile numbers or changed doctor or emergency contact person or got a new email address – please update these details on the Aladdin App yourself so that we can contact you in case of emergency. You can do this yourself, there is no need to ring in, just change it on the App and we will be notified automatically.

We will no longer be sending texts to parents – we will just use the Aladdin app.

“Cent” Box – Thorntree Project

“Cent” boxes will continue this year. Last year we raised €1000 for the Thorntree Project.
Rang 4/5 (Ms. Carol Ann O’Donovan) and Rang 5/6 (Mr. Seán Daly) will be in charge of this and will inform you later of how it will be organised. We have been assisting the Thorntree Project since 2015, when we release a Christmas single “Butterfly Child”. Please support this worthy cause, when asked to do so.

Recycling – Green Waste

Over the past few years we have tried – in vain – to recycle our Green Waste and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out, probably because the only waste was fruit.
The Recycling bins have being attracting visitors that we don’t want! Because of this we are asking boys to bring home their apple cores, banana skins (organic waste) etc from now on.

Tin foil and uneaten lunches will be brought home also. Many thanks for your cooperation.

Roots of Empathy

Roots of Empathy is an international, universal,  evidence-based, classroom programme that has shown dramatic effect in reducing aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. Barnardos was chosen as the lead agency to deliver the programme in Ireland in 2011.
The programme has been delivered in a hundred and thirty primary schools around Ireland with a small number of schools in Cork and Waterford already participating. As a result of support from the Tomar Trust, Barnardos is now in a position to roll out the programme in West Cork & Waterford schools. They are currently developing a three year plan to involve schools in Cork and Waterford in the Roots of Empathy programme. We have been chosen as one of the West Cork Schools and will be implementing the programme this coming year.
