“Cent” Box – Thorntree Project

“Cent” boxes will continue this year. Last year we raised €1000 for the Thorntree Project.
Rang 4/5 (Ms. Carol Ann O’Donovan) and Rang 5/6 (Mr. Seán Daly) will be in charge of this and will inform you later of how it will be organised. We have been assisting the Thorntree Project since 2015, when we release a Christmas single “Butterfly Child”. Please support this worthy cause, when asked to do so.

Nut Allergy – IMPORTANT!

Quite a significant number of boys in our school are allergic to nuts and for them any contact with nuts or products containing traces of nuts can be dangerous for example NUTELLA or Peanut Butter!!!!
Please be aware of this when organising your child’s lunch and DO NOT allow your child to bring anything containing nuts to school. Your help in this matter is very much appreciated.

Please give your children water to drink coming to school – not sweet or fizzy drinks. NUTELLA OR PEANUTS are not permitted. This is for safety reasons. them. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

Recycling – Green Waste

Over the past few years we have tried – in vain – to recycle our Green Waste and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out, probably because the only waste was fruit.
The Recycling bins have being attracting visitors that we don’t want! Because of this we are asking boys to bring home their apple cores, banana skins (organic waste) etc from now on.

Tin foil and uneaten lunches will be brought home also. Many thanks for your cooperation.

Roots of Empathy

Roots of Empathy is an international, universal,  evidence-based, classroom programme that has shown dramatic effect in reducing aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. Barnardos was chosen as the lead agency to deliver the programme in Ireland in 2011.
The programme has been delivered in a hundred and thirty primary schools around Ireland with a small number of schools in Cork and Waterford already participating. As a result of support from the Tomar Trust, Barnardos is now in a position to roll out the programme in West Cork & Waterford schools. They are currently developing a three year plan to involve schools in Cork and Waterford in the Roots of Empathy programme. We have been chosen as one of the West Cork Schools and will be implementing the programme this coming year.

Update from the Thorntree Project

We recently received an update from the Thorntree Project in Kenya thanking us for our support and letting us know where our donations go.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Hello Clonakilty school students,

I hope this email finds you well wherever you are. Greetings from Samburu and specifically from the Lekiji pre school community, the parents and the students. They are all well. The weather is a little bit hot at the moment but the area is still green due to the massive rains we received earlier this year. We also expect rains this coming month and hence it will generally be a good year.

I am writing to update you about your pre-school. This year, the school has had 18 students, of which 8 are boys and 10 are girls.

Due to your kind donation, the teacher, Boniface Lengima, has been able to teach well and effectively and also maintain the kids in school. The students have received enough stationery and meals to sustain them throughout the day as well as the teacher receiving all the necessary teaching aids and supplies. Your donation has also catered for the teacher’s and cook’s salary. As a result, the teacher expects to take at least 10 students to grade 1 next year.

Thank you so much Clonakilty school students for your continued support of Lekiji pre school. The community is very grateful and appreciative of your kind gesture to help their children get quality education. They pass their warm regards and welcome you to Lekiji one of these fine days for some goat meat and Samburu chai.

Thanks again,

Micah.

Last Day For Words Their Way for 2nd Class & A Big Thank You To Yvonne:

Today was our last day working with Yvonne during Words Their Way in 2nd class. The boys presented Yvonne with a beautiful plant as a token of their appreciation! The boys absolutely loved working with Yvonne and she always came in with such enthusiasm.

A huge thank you to Yvonne for all her help this year, it was greatly appreciated!

The School Garden Is In Full Bloom:

Thank you to Harry Lyon’s mum who baked a delicious rhubarb crumble, using the rhubarb from our garden,  for the boys who helped out in the garden all year. They ate it all and it was delicious!
We are reaping the fruits of our labour in the garden. The boys are eating strawberrries daily, our marigolds and sweet peas are in full bloom and the onions and garlic are close to being ready to harvest. Well done to all the boys and thank you to Harry’s mum- for once we sat down in the garden and enjoyed the crumble!

Baking with Ms. Eileen Breen

The boys used maths skills in number, measures and shape and space to weigh the ingredients, read the measures on the screen and calculate how any biscuits would fit best on the baking tray to ensure they would not merge together in the oven. Baking with children is a great life to skill to practice often as it both a social and practical skill.

4th Class Were Flying High at School Tour

5th and 6th Class beach clean at Inchydoney

The boys form 5th and 6th class took part in a beach clean up at Inchydoney Beach along with other local schools on Wednesday the 5th. The event was hosted by The Land and Sea Trust and the boys learned a lot about where there waste goes and the environmental issues the world is facing.

Remembering Danny White

Just yesterday we heard the very sad news that one of our past pupils Danny White had passed away in Cork University Hospital. Danny was a pupil in Scoil na mBuachaillí and was involved in all activities both during school and after school.

In later life Danny was very involved in all aspects of Clonakilty life especially the GAA. He was an utter gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be sincerely missed by all here in Scoil na mBuachaillí and we offer our condolences to his family at this very difficult time.

If you have moved, changed phone/mobile numbers or changed doctor or emergency contact person or got a new email address – please update these details on the Aladdin App yourself so that we can contact you in case of emergency.

Can Can-Paign

All cans gratefully received. Please contact Ms. Regina Fitzmaurice if you have any query re. this matter. Many thanks to Ms. Fitzmaurice.
She and 6th class will also look after the school garden and glasshouse. The money that is collected by this scheme is used in the school garden.
Thanks to Maroof and Colin for looking after the cans this coming year.

Orienteering in Farran Woods

On March 12th 2024 our school Scoil na mBuachaillí went to Farran Woods orienteering. Most of the pupils from 5th and 6th came on two different busses. Ms O’Keeffe, Ms Fitzmaurice, Mrs Connolly, Ms Mac Auley and Ms Aerts came with us.

There was a competitive and a non-competitive competition. The non-competitive one was full of everyone that got unlucky and missed out on making it on the main team.

The competitive team were lucky enough to get to run on the main course! We ran on a wet and muddy day. There were 13 points in the 5th class course that we had to put our SI card in. The course was 1.6km altogether from start to finish.

Overall our school had a great day and a fun time and we can’t wait till the next one. We hope you enjoyed our report on our orienteering competition in Farran woods

Ewan Bell and Liam Ahern, 5th class

We had a great day orienteering last Tuesday March 12th in Farran Forest Park. This was the Cork Championship and the courses were very challenging. 5th class won the team event with Ewan Bell, Liam Ahern, Finbarr O’Mahony and Danny Fortistal winning a gold team medal. 6th class came 2nd in the team event with John Mc Carthy, Cillian Whooley, Max Wade and Samuel Kearns winning a silver team medal. Well done to Samu Skosana who won a gold medal in the Primary Pairs course with Sam Murphy winning a silver medal and Aran Cronin winning bronze.  This is a great achievement as there were schools from all over County Cork took part in this event. Many thanks to all the teachers and SNA who went with the boys on the day. A great day and a great event. Our next event now is the Munster Championship on April 18th. Watch this space.

When Harry met Mrs. Minihan

By Harry Lyons (4th Class)

Harry: Can you tell me about when you were a child?

Noreen: I lived in Pearse Street, and my mom had a shop, and it was called Betty Brosnan’s. We played on the street. We played hopscotch, and we played marbles. We’d cut holes in a shoe box, and roll the marble and try to get it through one of the holes, to win more marbles back. We used to also skip, and we’d roll a hoop all the way up the middle of Pearse Street. Outside where Michael O’Neill’s butcher is now. You’d hardly ever see a car in the street. But you’d see lots of horses and carts. And one day there was a man on a ladder painting one of the houses on Pearse Street, and a man from the country came in with his donkey and cart. He never looked up, and he tied his donkey onto the end of the ladder, but just in time somebody saw him and left a shout at him.

I went to school where the convent school is now. I started when I was four years old, and the nuns taught me. And I remember the very first day I went to school, they had a tray, with sand, and you’d run you finger up and down the sand, to make figure one or four.

Harry: What was your favourite toy when you were young?

I loved dolls, and I loved dressing them, and I loved putting them into my pram and taking them for a walk. And I loved brushing their hair. And there was little books with a cardboard doll and clothes inside, and you had to cut out the clothes, and fit them onto the doll. And of course, she had a different frock on her every time you wanted it.

Harry: What was your favourite sweet when you were young?

I love chocolate, but chocolate was expensive. So you’d seldom get a bar of chocolate. Maybe at Christmas time. You might get an orange or an apple, and a bottle of Deasy’s lemonade. There was a big firm here in Clonakilty called Deasy’s, and they made their own lemonade. So we always supported Deasy’s. Other than that, maybe, a barley sugar sweet or there were lovely sweets called Liquorice Allsorts. They were different. Some of them were pink with the liquorice in the middle, and more of them were white with a little sandwich made out of liquorice.

Harry: When did you start teaching?

When I did my Leaving Cert, my friend went off to England to be a nurse and I said, you know, maybe I’ll be a nurse too. But the nuns got me to do the exam, to do teaching. And  I got it, and everybody was excited about it. So I went down to Limerick, to training college, and that’s where I was trained to be a teacher. And I’m lucky because I loved it.

Harry: So you liked teaching?

I loved teaching, I must say there was very seldom a morning that I went over to the school that I didn’t mind turning the key in the door and going in. I was very lucky because we had a separate infant boys school, with only junior infants, senior infants and first class. The people who were teaching with me were all mothers as well. So we were always helping one another. And then when the principal retired, I was made the principal. And I also had first communion class, and I loved getting the boys ready for their first communion.

Harry: Why did you get involved with the Clonakilty Tidy Towns?

My friend Greta O’Donovan was elected to the council, and she noticed how dirty the town was. When people put out their rubbish, it was in a plastic bag. And sometimes early in the morning, the crows would come along and they’d make holes in the plastic bag, picking at what food was inside. And then the dogs would come along and they’d tear open the bags. And I must say, the place was very grubby and very dirty

Greta called a meeting and asked would a few of us come to a meeting in the town hall. To do something about the dirt in the town. From that, each person went to their own area in town and came back to the meeting and said what we should do. And one day we had a big, huge brush up in Clonakilty and everybody came out and they brushed up the dirt and they put it into plastic bags that the council gave us. And then the council came along and they collected all the rubbish and they dumped it for us. That’s how it started. That was in 1989.

Harry: What was that the biggest change you have seen in Clonakilty?

That would be the greatest change. A lot of the shops in Clonakilty, had dull and plain frontages to them. We got a new county architect, and he was from Clonakilty. His parents used to make bread in Clonakilty. They were called Houlihan’s and he was Billy Houlihan. And Billy Houlihan spoke to all his friends, and they decided that they’d paint up their frontages and that they take down the old tiles and they would get nice windows made out of timber and paint them nicely and put them in. And we were very lucky. In Clonakilty there was a man by the name of Dan Callanan, who was great at making things out of timber. He was a cabinet maker and he found it very easy to make all these things that we wanted. So if you start now at the end of the town and come into the Clonakilty, there’s an estate of houses down there and it is so colourful. They call it Smartie Land because of all the colours. And when you come up along the town, you’ll see that there are lovely timber windows, displaying what’s inside. And it’s always remarked in the tidy towns competition, how lovely they are. The only thing that is very annoying is when people drop the cigarette butts all the time.

Harry: What was your favourite holiday destination?

My favourite holiday when I was young, was I had a brother in Dublin, and I used to put all the children into the car and Michael and myself, we’d drive to Dublin and Michael would go on a golf course and we’d go around Dublin looking at the zoo and the museums and taking a walk around in the lovely parks. And I used to go up to Mayo to a place called Swinford, because that’s where my dad came from. My dad was one of the first seven guards who came to Clonakilty in 1923. They came down from Dublin, and there had been a war in Clonakilty, and the barracks was all blown up. So where Crowley’s chemist shop is now on the main street, that was the barracks. When they arrived first, and they were coming down the hill into Clonakilty, there was a big trench dug across the road. They had to take off the sides of the lorry and put it over the big trench and drive over it. That’s how they came down into the town.

Harry: I heard you write a letter each year that goes all around the world. Can you tell me about that?

It all started off where I had four aunties, three in Mayo and one in Cobh. And every year I wrote to them. And you see, I was only writing the same letter every time. I started writing a longer letter, and I gave it to cousins and friends, and everybody seemed to want to hear all about it. I’d write about my own family, if we went on a holiday, and about the places that we went to. And, so now it’s an A4 sheet and I write about 25 pages. And now I’m sending to people who have no relationship to me, but they wanted to see the letter and they wanted to hear the news of Clonakilty.

Harry: And finally, my last question. What advice would you give to your ten year old self?

I suppose I’d give the same advice as I would give to anybody else, and that is, to listen at school, and every night to do the lessons. Because I know there are lots of people and they don’t bother with their lessons and they just throw down their sack. But I do know that if you reinforce at night time what you learn at school, and if you do it all your life, it is a great help, particularly when you go into second level, and there are harder lessons at second level, but they are very interesting. That would be my advice.

School Garden:

We have been busy in our garden over the last few weeks. Our sweet peas and Calendula are all showing  signs of growth. Our onions and garlic are also all growing well and our rhubarb is starting to shoot. We always remember Mr. Collins (RIP) fondly when the rhubarb starts to grow as he planted it for our school.
Last week we dug our ridge for the potatoes. Padraig Hurley and Ben Deasy worked with boys from 2nd class and together with Ms. Fitzmaurice they planted the potatoes. They are early potatoes so hopefully we will be able to eat them in June. Also Ms. O’Boyle gave us some strawberry plants and we planted them in our glasshouse. Hopefully we will have strawberries in June also. Thank you Ms. O’Boyle.
Dylan Walsh,  Kevin Allen and Liam Mc Carthy in 5th class have also been very busy weeding and cleaning all the yards.
So we are very busy.
We will keep you updated and let you know when our crops are ready for harvest.
Thank you to all the boys and their teachers for their hard work and also to Mr. Harrington for his support as always in all we do.

Global Goals Week 23/24 South Africa Zero Hunger

Joe Gallagher & Leon O Callaghan

We learned a lot about South Africa listening to all the facts from Sphamanda Mthempu who speaks Zulu but spoke to us in English. We have a student in our 5th Class orginally from South Africa who shares the same second name can also speak Zulu! Samu Sphamanda Skosana also is a very talented artist!

Back to Global Goals Week-

The ambassador from South Africa Sphamanda Mthempu  mentioned that everyone has the right to food no matter where you’re from and we strongly agree with this. He also mentioned that food prices increase because of wars in Europe another reason may be because of conflict between some countries in Europe.

Climate change doesn’t help with food shortages either as climate change means droughts and floods. He also stated that hunger makes people less productive and that really doesn’t help as many jobs require loads of people working together and when people are hungry and less productive which makes each job way too complicated.

Global Goals Week 2024

Green School’s Global Goal Day 1

By Samuel Kearns and Conor Moore 6th class

As part of Global Goals Week there is a Zoom call with school around Ireland and across the world from countries such as South Africia, Kenya, Nigeria, UAE, Ghana and Mali. Each day different Global goal and country is highlighted. Today was Ireland’s turn to talk.

We meet Sadbh and Cullen from Kilworth NS Co Cork. They spoke about their dads work with the UN. We learned the United Nations was founded in 1945. Ireland joined in 1965.

There were first 51 members of the United Nations. Now the numbers are increasing rapidly. There are 193 countries.

We learned about the blue berets. They symbolize peace against war and they were mainly worn by the peace keepers of the UN.

Their vehicles are white with large black letter’s saying UN. The members of the UN are from the countries all over the world.

The United Nations has 17 goals.

  1. No Poverty.
  2. Zero hunger.
  3. Good health and wellbeing.
  4. Quality education.
  5.  Gender equality
  6.  Clean water.
  7.  Clean energy.
  8.  Decent work pay.
  9.  Industry innovation and infrastructure.
  10.  Reduced inequalities.
  11.  Sustainable city’s/ make city’s safe.
  12.  Responsible consumption and production.
  13.  Climate action.
  14.  Life below water.
  15.  Life on land.
  16.  Peace on earth.
  17.  Partnerships for the global goals.

That was the list of the global goals.

There are now 193 member nations.

David Donahue was the former ambassador for Ireland along with the Kenyan Ambassador that got all countries to agree to these Global Goals back in 2015.  We also heard from Irelands Youth Delegate called Mohammad Naeem from Mayo who taught us some interesting facts. Such as

90% of youth lives in developing countries.

74 million youths are unemployed.

We are looking forward to tomorrows Zoom from South Africia.

During Covid 19, 43 million people from the United States government helped to fund food for South Africa. Food security is a HUGE challenge for South Africa and any other developing countries. Food security means food will be available regardless of farming, climate change, gender, war and or conflict. He also said that there are thousands of farmers without an education so there should be an education for all famers. He believes that you should have access to food regardless of gender, age, or where you live. He mentioned that there is that food is very limited in South Africa.

In South Africa they grow cabbage and many other organic vegetables and they even have a food chart to check on their progress. You can get mangos in South Africa in the month of December. Here are some plants that they suggested planting in a learner’s garden, spring onion, lemon trees, herbs, and carrots. Global goal two (Zero hunger) must be achieved in South Africa and every other developing countries.

Nut Allergy – IMPORTANT!

Quite a significant number of boys in our school are allergic to nuts and for them any contact with nuts or products containing traces of nuts can be dangerous for example NUTELLA or Peanut Butter!!!!

Please give your children water to drink coming to school – not sweet or fizzy drinks. NUTELLA OR PEANUTS are not permitted. This is for safety reasons. them. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.
