Enrolling for 2023/2024 is underway

Our Admission notice has now been published on our school website – https://snbclonakilty.com. We are now accepting applications for next September’s classes. Please click on this link to order an Admission (Enrolment) Form.

Enrolment forms are being sent out daily to parents who have ordered them. If you do not receive your enrolment form, please ring the school on 023 8834487 as we may not have received your request.

An open day will be held on the first Wednesday in February 2023 – 1st of February, 2023. More details re. times etc later on in the year.

• 1st of October: online enrolment starts for 2023/2024.
• 17th of October: Teacher Inservice day – School closed.

• The AGM of the Parent’s Association will be held in October. As above: Details later. At this meeting we will be choosing a mother and father to be members of the Board of Management for the next 4 years.
• Chess is starting for Rang 4 on Tuesday the 25th of October, and for Rang 5 and Rang 6 on Wednesday 26th of October *this has to be confirmed.

Hallowe’en 2022

Many thanks to Ms. Orla O’Keeffe for organising the Halloween Fancy Dress Parade today, Friday 28th of October. Thanks to Mrs. Elaine Connolly for organising the poetry and art competition for Halloween.

Thanks to all the parents and the boys for their fabulous costumes and supporting the Mercy Hospital. So far we have raised €1057.00.

Rang 7 have been busy getting into the Halloween spirit with sppoky art, dressing up to candy apple making.  

Boys from Ukraine

The school is happy to welcome boys from Ukraine who have joined our school. They are enrolled from Senior Infants up to 5^th Class. The boys have been doing a great job of making friends with their peers and have been letting their new friends know a little about their lives in Ukraine. They have been finding the words to describe their hobbies and let everyone know about their interests, their favourite games, hobbies and food. The boys also let the pupils in their class know a little bit about the towns and cities from where they came. Here are some of the pictures they selected for their presentations.

Great fun was had I the beautiful October sun!
First class had a great afternoon in Castlefreake. We went on a  hike and explored the woods. We built bridges and camps. We all worked as a team. We all really enjoyed it.

Debating Win against Kilbrittain School

The 6^th class boys debating team in action against Kilbrittain National School this morning in the Concern Primary School Debating Competition.

The team were opposing the motion that ‘Fines should be implemented for households wasting food’. Captaining the team was Ethan O Donovan, who introduced his fellow teammates, Eoin O Sullivan and Matthew Afonso in his opening speech of the debate. Each of the boys delivered persuasive arguments in opposing the motion and they successfully convinced the independent adjudicator by their powerful speeches and the motion was defeated. Chairperson Seán Knowles concluded the debate by thanking both teams, the adjudicator, teachers and all involved. Eolann Coakley also played a very important role in time keeping, while Ben O Regan, Olan White and Josh Wedlock helped the team in setting up the debating area. Well done also to Ólan Quirke and Kevin White who played vital roles in assisting the team with rebuttals.

Each 6^th class boy contributed to this debate, and they worked so hard over the past few weeks preparing for the difficult motion and even conducted a mock debate a week prior to the main event. In this mock debate, the boys faced Seán Knowles, Joseph Cahalane and Matthew Kingston, who also performed excellent speeches in the mock debate. Well done to the boys and thank you to the parents who have no doubt listened to speeches at home and thank you to Mrs MacAuley, Ms. O’Donovan, Mrs. Hayes, Ms. Hayes and Mr. Daly for all their hard work. Now to start preparing for Round two!

Halloween Fancy Dress Parade

Our annual Halloween Fancy Dress Parade will be held on October 28th in the school. Children are encouraged to make their own costumes rather than buying one.
We are also collecting for the Mercy Hospital again this year and parents can support this worthy cause by the Aladdin App.

When will the Applications Process Start?
Thursday 13th October at 5pm.
What is the closing date for making an application?
Thursday 10th November 2022 at 5pm.
How do I apply for a place?
Applications can be made by going to our website http://www.clonakiltycc.ie.
Click on “Enrolments” and you will see a link to “APPLY HERE”. This will allow you to
enter all of the information to apply for a place in September 2023.
What if I miss the deadline?
If you miss the closing date you can still apply but you will then be placed on a waiting list.

What are the criteria to get a place in 1st Year 2023?

This Policy outlines clearly the full list of criteria and includes a full list of our eligible feeder schools.
What if I am not in a feeder school/in the local catchment area/have no siblings in the
school?
You can still apply but priority will be given to others according to the criteria laid out in
the Admissions Policy.

Math’s Week

5th & 6th class getting ready for next week’s Maths Week playing Times Tables Rock Stars! 

The boys in Junior Infants enjoyed some maths stations this week focussing in on 2D shapes. We played shape snap, made shape pictures and patterns. Thanks to the 5th class boys for helping us! 

Last week was maths week.

Firstly, we did Timetables Rock Stars on the computers in the hall. We found out how to do a multiplayer on TT rock stars. We got to do Jamming, which is where you select what tables you want to use, and it will randomly select what sums out of the selected tables it will give you

After that we made tangrams. Then we made abstract art using the tangram pieces. After that we played different maths boardgames.

Then on Thursday we did a maths trail. Firstly, we went to the path next to the car park. We were asked different questions about the cars. E.g.,“What is the cars registration number “and” How many wheels in total are in the carpark? Then we went to the bug hotel and figured out what was used to make the bug hotel. Then we went to the soccer and basketball pitch and tried to spot different lines, angles, and shapes. E.g., diagonal lines, trapezium, hexagon. Overall, we had a wonderful week for maths week.

Debating Team

Best wishes to our Debating who meet Kinsale N.S. in the first round of the Debating competition on the 20th of October. Thanks to Ms. Niamh Mac Auley, Mr. Seán Daly, Mrs. Maire Hayes and Ms. Carol Ann O’Donovan for coaching the team.

We received this email today from the Butterfly children, who we support each year.

Dear Clonakilty School Students.

How are you? It’s my hope that you are all doing well. We are all fine here in Samburu, Kenya. It is very hot at the moment and the drought seems to have prolonged more than expected. Most water sources have dried up and there is very little vegetation that has forced most families to migrate to very far off places with their animals in search of water and pasture.

I am writing to give you a short update about Lekiji pre-school that you generously sponsor at Sere Olipi. There are 17 pupils at the school this year, of which 10 are boys and 7 are girls. Their teacher is still Mr. Boniface Lengima and he is doing a fantastic job. He was able to graduate 2 pupils to grade 1 at Sere Olipi primary at the beginning of this academic year and he hopes to raise the number to 5 come next year.

The pre school has been able to run smoothly thanks to your kind and generous donations. Your support has been used to pay for the teacher’s and cook’s monthly salaries, stationery, portable blackboard, porridge and other teaching and learning essentials. 

Thank you so much for supporting the pre-school and helping the pupils of the area have access to education which could not have been possible without your kindness. The teacher, the parents and the pupils are forever grateful. They pass their regards.

Autumn Aistear in Juniors

The Junior Infants are enjoying some Autumn Aistear at the moment. We are looking for signs of Autumn and talking about animals getting ready for hibernation. 

Delivery of new Cajons

We have just received delivery of 7 new Cajons. This means we have now 14 cajons in our music room. Just as well as Laurie is teaching 57 boys the Cajon each week.

We have 20 guitars rented this year – the highest ever!

Guitar Rental: we are changing the guitar rental scheme this year as new instruments will have to be purchased. The new fee is non refundable but is reduced to €25 instead of €50. What’s going on? … in school and extra-curricular activities.

Basketball 22/23: Basketball training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the end of September / early October. Thanks to Ms. Carol Anne O’Donovan / Seán Daly / Paul Carmody for assisting again with Basketball this year. This year it have to be run as last year – Tuesday will be for Rang 5 / Thursday will be for Rang 6.

Quizzard ‘22/23: will start soon. Classes from Rang 3 – Rang 6 will be participating. This will start in November.

Chess: starts at the end of September. Boys in Rang 4, Rang 5 and Rang 6 may participate. It will run on Tuesdays and Wednesday after school. We hope to start before the end of September and end before Easter.

“Cent” Box – Thorntree Project

“Cent” boxes will continue this year.
Rang 5 (Ms. Carol Ann O’Donovan) and Rang 5/6(Mr. Seán Daly) will be in charge of this and will inform you later of how it will be organised. We have been assisting the Thorntree Project since 2015, when we release a Christmas single “Butterfly Child”. Please support this worthy cause, when asked to do so.

Recycling – Green Waste

Over the past few years we have tried – in vain – to recycle our Green Waste and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out, probably because the only waste was fruit.
The Recycling bins have being attracting visitors that we don’t want! Because of this we are asking boys to bring home their apple cores, banana skins (organic waste) etc from now on.

Tin foil and uneaten lunches will be brought home also. Many thanks for your cooperation.

Roots of Empathy

Roots of Empathy is an international, universal,  evidence-based, classroom programme that has shown dramatic effect in reducing aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. Barnardos was chosen as the lead agency to deliver the programme in Ireland in 2011.
The programme has been delivered in a hundred and thirty primary schools around Ireland with a small number of schools in Cork and Waterford already participating. As a result of support from the Tomar Trust, Barnardos is now in a position to roll out the programme in West Cork & Waterford schools. They are currently developing a three year plan to involve schools in Cork and Waterford in the Roots of Empathy programme. We have been chosen as one of the West Cork Schools and will be implementing the programme this coming year. Please note Covid-19 may change these plans.
