ZoomTV SnB

ZoomTV Snb replaces Raidio SnB this year. So far it has been a great success. Please forgive the quality of the pictures – they are screenshots and are a bit blurry. Many thanks to all the teachers for preparing the boys for ZoomTV SnB.

5000 bottles of Water so far !

Jamal is pictured below, he is the 1000th person who have filled their bottles at the Water Refiller Station and next to him is Conor, he is the 2000th person! The 3000th person is Gavin.

Green School’s Application

On Friday 25th of March, Ms. Niamh Mac Auley and her Green School team have applied for the Green Flag for 2021/2022.

€2260.47 raised for Daffodil Day

St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Clonakilty

Culture Day / St. Patrick’s Day School Parade

In our school we have over 29 different nationalities represented. Unfortunately more than 60 children were absent today and missed getting their photograph taken. Still it was a fabulous day. Thanks to Ms. Orla O’Keeffe for organising it. Thanks also to Mrs. Marie Hayes for organising Culture Day.

To celebrate the schools international day on the 16th of March, the boys in 5th class all researched and presented projects on countries that they have a connection with. It was a great celebration of our diversity here in SNB. 

We really enjoyed setting up our display tables with our projects and foods traditional to the different countries. 

Each of the 5th classes visited each other to see the projects and sample the food and drinks on offer. We even had a visit from Mr. Harrington.

Science Week – Rang 5 B

For engineers week 5th class were virtually visited by a scientist who talked to them about the physics of building a waterwheel. 

The boys then built and tested their own waterwheels with simple materials. The results were excellent with every group building a model that worked! 

We also spent some time working with the schools LEGO sets where the boys built complex models. 

Engineering Week in Seniors

Senior Infants thoroughly enjoyed all the activities throughout the week. They designed their own dream playground and constructed a Lego bridge. They made their own boats out of recyclable materials and had great fun testing if they would sink or float. They finished the week by designing and creating an egg zipline.

Rang 5 A are working on circuits

In 5A class this week, we learned about electricity. We made circuits that turned on lights and even buzzers! We also learned how to be safe around electricity.

Orienteering: SnB comes 2nd in Cork

Rang 6 are getting ready for their first orienteering competition on Thursday 10th of March. Thanks to Ms. Fitzmaurice for coaching the boys.

Tony O’Keeffe’s report on the day at Tramore Valley Park.

The 6th class went orienteering on the 10th of March to Tramore Valley Park.
They went on an hour long bus trip to cork. The day before we went we did a practice run around the school with 12 points Starting outside the 6th class’s door with Richard Kennedy and Harry Ellis.
Recording the times that we got on a tablet we ran 30 seconds apart.
Ms. Mac Auley and Ms. Fitzmauirce helped us with the orienteering and gave us the chance for us to go. On the day we went at 9 o’clock in the morning all in our clothes and 15 of us went competitive and 5 of us went non-competitive. There was a lot of different schools at the orienteering competition. Our school was in 6th class category there was a 5th class category a 1st year category and 2nd category two. When we got there we dropped our bags off ad went over to the start line we got a SI card and we were supposed to get our maps when we arrived at Tramore Valley Park but when we got at the starting line we only had to minutes to look at our maps before went then we had to clear our SI cards then check just to make sure that they were clear then we pressed start and went.
There was nine points you had to get them all in order or else you would be disqualified. From what we heard pretty much every one got pretty stuck on point 5. After we finished we went and ate our lunch and had and went back to school. We were told that if we wanted to see our times we had to go on a website our see our times. The team was Tony O’Keeffe, Logan Leahy, Josh Khan, and Cian Kelly O Connell. Our team came second and will get a silver medal for Orienteering at Tramore Valley Park.

World Book Day

4th class boys doing story writing stations for World Book Day. 

Boys divided into writing teams to work as authors and illustrators to create a story book together.

Today we did a World Book Day event week. For World Book Day event week. We watched a video on letter writing by Bethany Walker. She is the author of ‘How to Steal the Mona Lisa.’In the video she showed us her booksand the importance of letters. Firstly, she showed us important letters throughout history. Then, she showed us some of the letters in herbook. She told us how you could almost hear the voice of through letters.  She showed us a letter of Galileo writing about the telescope in 1610 and she also showed us a letter of John F. Kennedy writing about how he needed to escape an island in 1943. Later, in 1963 John F. Kennedy became the president of the United States.

Rang 5 B are learning about France and Volcanoes

Recently in 5th class B we’ve been learning about France. We each researched one topic and presented what we found to the class. We put it all together on our display board. 

We’ve also been learning about volcanoes and what makes them erupt!

Pancake Tuesday

Senior Infants finished their Aistear topic ‘The Restaurant’ by creating pancake menus and making their own pancakes to celebrate Pancake Tuesday.  Seniors/1st made pancakes on Pancake Tuesday. They were delicious. We also pretended we worked in a restaurant.

• Elocution: for all classes Juniors – Rang 6. €7.50 in total. Many parents have paid already for this. Don’t worry, you can’t pay twice.

Junior Infants have been very busy!

In February we have investigated mixing colours and listened to the story Mouse Paint. We spoke about people who help us. We set up our own Doctors surgery and looked at the job of a firefighter in Aistear. We are all enjoying Cycle Sense with Ulich. We are gaining confidence on our bikes every Monday. We also showed our love this Valentines Day and are delighted to see the bulbs we planted in September coming into bloom!

“Cent” Box – Thorntree Project

“Cent” boxes will continue this year in a different format due to Covid-19.
Rang 5 A (Ms. Marguerite Bradshaw) and 5 B (Mr. Seán Daly) will be in charge of this and will inform you later of how it will be organised. We have been assisting the Thorntree Project since 2015, when we release a Christmas single “Butterfly Child”. Please support this worthy cause, when asked to do so.

You can do this yourself, there is no need to ring in, just change it on the App and we will be notified automatically.

Recycling – Green Waste

Over the past few years we have tried – in vain – to recycle our Green Waste and unfortunately it hasn’t worked out, probably because the only waste was fruit.
The Recycling bins have being attracting visitors that we don’t want! Because of this we are asking boys to bring home their apple cores, banana skins (organic waste) etc from now on.

Tin foil and uneaten lunches will be brought home also. Many thanks for your cooperation.

What’s going on? … in school and extra-curricular activities.

Basketball 21/22: Basketball training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the end of September / early October. Thanks to Ms. Carol Anne O’Donovan / Seán Daly / Paul Carmody for assisting again with Basketball this year. This year it have to be run as last year – Tuesday will be for Rang 5 / Thursday will be for Rang 6.

Quizzard ‘21/22: will start soon. Classes from Rang 3 – Rang 6 will be participating. Last year we only managed to do a few rounds, outside in the yard but we are hoping to complete it in the coming year. Cillian Whooley and Pearse Nolan are in charge of the Quiz this year.

Chess: started in September. Boys in Rang 4, Rang 5 and Rang 6 may participate. It will run on Tuesdays and Wednesday after school. We hope to start before the end of September and end before Easter.

Wardens – every year Rang 6 act as School Wardens. The scheme is up and running. Thanks to our team of SET teachers who have taken over from Mr. O’Driscoll. Thanks also to Chris Hinchy for his help again this year.

Roots of Empathy

Roots of Empathy is an international, universal,  evidence-based, classroom programme that has shown dramatic effect in reducing aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. Barnardos was chosen as the lead agency to deliver the programme in Ireland in 2011.
The programme has been delivered in a hundred and thirty primary schools around Ireland with a small number of schools in Cork and Waterford already participating. As a result of support from the Tomar Trust, Barnardos is now in a position to roll out the programme in West Cork & Waterford schools. They are currently developing a three year plan to involve schools in Cork and Waterford in the Roots of Empathy programme. We have been chosen as one of the West Cork Schools and will be implementing the programme this coming year. Please note Covid-19 may change these plans.
